This tutorial provides instructions and demonstrations for creating and enabling Internet Explorer 8 web slices on pages within your PHP site. The third section provides two accelerators: an accelerator which can be used to blog content with Wordpress and an
accelerator to quickly send an email via your Facebook inbox. In order to view the web slices and accelerators, you must be using Internet Explorer 8. All code can be downloaded as a solution package.
The overall goal of this project is to demonstrate how PHP applications can take advantage of Microsoft technologies. Internet Explorer 8 introduces web slices and accelerators. Because they are based on HTML and XML they can be easily integrated into any web
platform. Web slices are portions of a web page to which a user can subscribe. A button is added to the user's favorites toolbar and glows orange when the content is updated. Clicking on the button displays the content of the web slice. Accelerators provide
a mechanism for quickly responding to content on a web page, e.g. mapping an address or creating a new blog post on your Wordpress site based on a news article you just read.
The solution package for this project contains sample HTML markup and PHP scripts to create web slices. Code to enable web slices in the Wordpress, Wikimedia and Facebook platform are also included as is dample code for two accelerators. An online tutorials
accompanies this project and provides step by step instructions on how to create web slices and offers a brief introduction to accelerators.
